Tax Relief Legislation For Disabled Veterans And Their Families

Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation that extends the current homestead property tax exemption for eligible disabled military veterans and their families. SB 352 is now Public Act 161 of 2013. Michigan disabled veterans are eligible for exemption of the property taxes on their principle residence if:

  1. The veteran has been determined by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs to be permanently and totally disabled as a result of military service and entitled to veterans’ benefits at the 100% rate, or;
  2. Has a certificate from the United States Department of Veteran Affairs, or its successors, certifying that he or she is receiving or has received pecuniary assistance due to disability for specially adapted housing, or;
  3. Has been rated by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs as individually unemployable.

If a disabled veteran who is otherwise eligible for the exemption under this law dies, either before or after the exemption under this law is granted, the exemption shall remain available to or shall continue for his or her un-remarried surviving spouse. The exemption will need to be renewed on an annual basis.

Ingham and Clinton County residents who need verification of their eligibility status for the exemption can contact Ingham County Department of Veteran Affairs at http://www.michigan.gov/veterans or (517) 887-4331.
